ParticipantChris,
I’m developing a new platform, and testing page load times to optimise the site.
Strangely, I noticed that after upgrading to v2.40.7 my page load times seem to have rocketed. So I did a little analysis using two identical test sites.
With the previous version of the plugin v2.40.3:
Page with no map:
Page load time: 1.59s
Total page size: 123KB
Total number of requests: 20Same page but with map – 1 POI:
Page load time: 2.32s
Total page size: 229KB
Total number of requests: 26With the latest version of the plugin v2.40.7:
Page with no map:
Page load time: 1.66s
Total page size: 138KB
Total number of requests: 20Same page but with map – 1 POI:
Page load time: 2.81s
Total page size: 574KB
Total number of requests: 58So, v2.40.3 of the plugin added 106Kb to the page load and required 6 requests.
However, v2.40.7 added 436Kb to the page load and required 38 requests!!!!!
In both cases, the map loaded was identical and just used a single POI.
Could you explain why the latest version needs an additional 330Kb of data and an extra 32 requests to display exactly the same thing?
I should add that aside from the upgraded MapPress plugin, the sites are otherwise identical and use the same plugins (same versions)
I’m hoping this is some kind of bug. Could you look into it please?
Thanks,
Clive

ParticipantChris,
An update for you.
I deleted v2.40.7 from my main Dev site (the one that was previously running v2.40.7) and reuploaded v2.40.3.
I changed nothing at all (i.e. all settings remained the same) and tested the same page again.
Here are the results with v2.40.3:
Page load time: 1.80s
Total page size: 247KB
Total number of requests: 26And exactly the same page with v2.40.7:
Page load time: 2.81s
Total page size: 574KB
Total number of requests: 58Quite a difference!

KeymasterHi Clive,
Sorry, but I can’t tell anything from those statistics. There weren’t any major changes between those versions.
If you’d like to put your page back up and provide a URL I’ll take a quick look.
You may want to try using developer tools (such as Firebug) yourself to see what’s being loaded rather than just a summary. MapPress itself uses only 1 javascript file and a CSS file. The Google API fetches various map tiles based on what location(s) are mapped, the map type, etc.

ParticipantHi Chris,
I’ve sent you a direct support ticket.
I’ve included links to GTMetrix performance stats, and have also put up a test site so you can play.
Logins etc are in my support ticket.
Cheers,
Clive

ParticipantSo… what was it? Enquiring minds want to know…

ParticipantKaren,
It’s basically down to a change Chris made which affects how the plugin loads the maps.
I’ve temporarily rolled back to a previous version, and Chris had advised that he will be altering the method in the next update.

ParticipantHi,
I am thinking of buying this plugin. I can download the 2.40.3 for wordpress.org for testing. Is it possible to upgrade to 2.40.3 Pro rather than 2.40.7 ? Drawbacks ?
Regards

ParticipantEmiljoc, I know that you can download previous versions of any free plugin from wordpress.org under the tab that says Developers.

ParticipantI know.
My point is: if I download, install and use the 2.40.3 version, can I upgrade to the 2.40.3 Pro version if I buy the plugin right now ?

Participantyes, As a Pro user I am able to download any version, including beta.
Hope this helps.
